Beta 2 install on old laptop

Postby danielpf » Apr 28th, '11, 16:55

laptop: Skate Littlebit = Compal Hei81, with updated Mandriva 2010.2

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First attempt: upgrade from Mandriva 2010.2:

1 Boot DVD

1. wants region "France" while should be "Suisse" (French language)
2. finds eth0 network but does not succeed to set up wifi
3. while configuring boot manager does not find package mageia-gfxboot-theme
4. rest of config looks fine as expected

2 Reboot
1. Seems like nothing have been changed in bootsplash
Mandriva screen and kernels as before
rpm -qa --last shows no new package
no change in /boot

3 Conclusion: failed

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Second attempt : install keeping previous /home intact

1 Boot DVD

1. Selection Europe Français as language
2. Selection of existing partitions on one disk:
sda1=/boot (78MB)
sda2=swap (3.8GB)
sda3=/ (11GB)
(the previous /home on sda4 is not selected)
3. Network eth0 (automatic connexion): success
4. KDE desktop
5. 1 user, no xguest user
6. install of nvidia driver , seems ok
7. network eth0 sucess
8. network wlan0 fails
9. update server found
10. while updating, hal daemon not running message

2 Reboot

1. Looks ok
2. nvidia works
3. login screen: usb mouse not recognized, must use the touchpanel
4. Write permission problem KDE message on some user ~/.local files
5. Install a few packages
-> 6. Suddenly laptop stops, no possible restart after different attempts

3 Conclusion: big failure, perhaps resulting from the infamous nvidia hardware bug
(this already happend on this laptop and was repaired by replacing motherboard/chips)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overall impression: except for losing the old laptop Mageia b2 seems on good track.
The various noted failures were typically also exisitng in previous Mandriva beta's
