Getting the Gnome 3 Shell working on my Nvidia platform

Postby wilcal » Nov 30th, '11, 03:41

My fastest computer platform:

SandyBridge - Video editing machine
-----------------------------------------------------
Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz overclocked to 3.8GHz LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core
GIGABYTE GA-Z68X-UD3-B3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
GIGABYTE GV-N440D3-1GI GeForce GT 440 (Fermi) 1GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16
CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
Seagate Barracuda ST31000524AS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
Sony Optiarc CD/DVD Burner Black SATA Model AD-7260S-0B
Thermaltake V9 BlacX Edition with Docking Station
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus CPU Cooler
Kingwin KF-91-BK SATA Mobile Rack
Kingwin KF-91-T-BK SATA Mobile Rack Tray

was loading Mageia 2 Alpha 1 Gnome just fine but I kept
getting the error message that Gnome was not compatible
with the hardware and would open in "Fallback" mode. And
it did. Even after I installed the Nvidia driver Gnome
continued to object to the hardware and open in Fallback.

This system runs like greased lightning with Mageia 1.

So to get Gnome 3 Shell ( standard ) running on this
platform I had to start from scratch and install KDE.
Once KDE was installed I then installed the Nvidia driver,
rebooted, and then made sure that the Nvidia driver was
really installed and working.

Then:

MCC -> install software -> task-gnome

reboot again back into KDE.

Then:

MCC -> Boot -> Autologin setup -> auto login to Gnome

reboot

and that worked. Now Gnome 3 Shell/Standard runs on this
system like greased lightning.

Note here I have 4 testing platforms:

One an old Celeron 1.7Ghz 04 vintage.
2nd a Pent 3 Intel platform
A Dell Vostro 1015 Laptop Celeron 925
And the SandyBridge i7-2600K Lightning

Gnome 3 Shell/Standard came up on the Pent 3
and the Dell Vostro right away. It did not come
up on the old Celeron as expected. It did not
recognize the SandyBridge/Nvidia until the
Nvidia driver was installed before Gnome.
Even if you install the Nvidia driver after
Gnome 3 is install it still does not go to
Shell/Standard. I'm not sure this is
something that the Mageia team can fix.
