remove/re-install KDE

Is it possible to remove and re-install KDE PLasma without removing everything else? I'm not even sure which version of Mageia I'm running...it could still be Mageia 9 beta 1 (but with all the updates installed) The reason is because Kmail 23.04.1 is acting strangely (it takes forever to retrieve mail...sometimes a day...but not always) It also comes up with sending -e-mail errors every time. I have another computer running Mageia 9 beta 2 with all the updates (including the exact same version of Kmail) It runs quickly with no errors at all. I never get e-mail sending errors with it, and it retrieves mail right away. Or should I just back up all my data and re-install M9 beta 2?
Thank you

- Code: Select all
cat /etc/release
will tell you which version you are running.
login in to another DE. icewm is installed in Mageia by default so you have a fallback GUI.
Then start removing KDE. When done, install task-plasma.

For this you need to know which packages belong to Plasma. Because removing task-plasma doesn't uninstall any Plasma related package. We had threads here that you need to use the orphan mechanism, but there is no guarantee that it will work.
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=14439&p=84842&hilit=remove+plasma#p84842I would first start to create a new user to rule out that there is a broken user setting in the user directory...

Well, I did not tell him to remove task-plasma.
But yea, good idea about the new user.

Also it is a bit quirky yet on mga9:
Bug 31382 - urpme --auto-orphans wants to uninstall too much

So, I followed the suggestion to add a new user and see if that made any difference. Well, it did. Kmail worked with no error messages. So, it appears something is broken in my user settings.
The next question: should I delete and then re-create myself as the user? I think there's a question that asks if I want to delete my data. If I say yes, just what data will be deleted?
Thank you.
I believe I have found the source of the problem. It is either (or both) the SPAM filter or the CLAMAV filter. I disabled both of them and the problem disappeared immediately.
