Mageia beta 9 - A few observations cum suggestions

Installed Mageia beta 9 with KDE Plasma using the Network Installation and it all went without a glitch. I managed to install minimal version of KDE Plasma without too many applications. Here are a few observations cum suggestions regarding Mageia 9 beta,

In System Settings -> Display and monitor -> Night Color , if one selects Switching times: Sunset and sunrise at current location, it gets stuck indefinitely at Locating...
According to my understanding KDE Plasma uses NetworkManager & networkmanager-qt to determine the location and these two packages are not installed by default in Mageia beta 9.

By default Mageia beta 9 uses Kicker as the application launcher instead of Kickoff application launcher. Any particular reasons? I think Kickoff has more features and should be the default application launcher. What do you guys say?

On Intel based systems vaapi-driver-intel gets automatically installed by the installer. I think it'll be nice if it was also able to install vaapi-driver-intel-media by default during the install process.

Other than these three little niggles, I think the Mageia dev team has done a fabulous job. The distro is snappy and rock solid. Kudos to the Mageia team. I hope the above points will be beneficial in making Mageia 9 the best release yet.

Cheers!!!

I know NetworkManager is installed if using the Live Plasma .iso. If using the Classical Installer (6DE pack) .iso, draknetcentre & netapplet are installed.
I have performed net-installs of plasma5 and usually draknetcentre and netapplet are installed. maybe if you removed some packages, they were also removed as dependencies?

regarding your vaapi package and kicker/kickoff suggestions, perhaps it would be best to create a bug report / enhancement request for both of these.
link both requests for others reading.

cheers

Hi there benmc,

I think you might have misunderstood me. Help me make a few things clear; Aren't netapplet and NetworkManager two separate things? If yes, then the Mageia specific network management utility (netapplet?) is installed but I think KDE Plasma specifically relies on NetworkManager to determine the location.

I have created Bugzilla listings,

https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31718

And, a package addition request also,
