MGA9 timeline?

Postby varrin » Apr 22nd, '22, 17:40

It's over a year since MGA8 was released. On this page:

https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_9_Development

There isn't even an estimated date for an alpha. I don't see any discussion here on the forum. I wonder if there's any update available?

Thanks!

The discussion is on dev and discussion ML. As there are no major/breaking differences or new features between MGA8 and the actual cauldron, which would make it urgent to release MGA9, there is no actual timeline. MGA8 is rock solid, runs smoothly.....so cauldron will bubble a little bit longer until there are major differences/features which will lead to a new release.

MGA8 will be supported until MGA9 is released (3 months longer).

Thank you for that update! :)

And yes, I'm still very happy with MGA8. It is running great for me!

I'm still green in Mageia but I think they release the new one "when it's ready" and there is still plenty of time before the 1.5 years timelapse. Maybe mageia 9 will come with some awesome changes like gnome 40.

Still, mageia 8 with backports enabled it's perfect, you have stable packages and newer versions of common desktop appliances.

Yep, and even without backports some updates are not just bugfixes.

Hopefully the devs can shine light on this question. And see if mageia is "stuck" on development and what can we do to help.

as noted Mageia 8 is very stable.

also noted, there are no pressing upgrade releases to the 6 desktops found on the Classical Install.iso, and unlikely to be a new kernel series (6) for some time.

there does not appear to be ground breaking new hardware (CPU / GPU) on the horizon (fortunately the horizon curves away, and I see in a straight line, so I am happy to be wrong).

If and when these changes occur is when there is likely to be a new release (Mga9), again, happy to be wrong.

Speculation:
There may be a Mga8.1 release, as a "new" install can have an update package set similar in size to a Live.iso. This is something the Mageia board does take note of, as ultimately, the board authorises the new releases

The desperate need for Gnome 40 and emacs got me there.

There are 6 DE's for Mageia? I didn't know that. I only knew GNOME, KDE and XFCE were the supported ones.

Not stuck at all, as you can see in several ways such as for example on dev mail list as well as bulid system that Cauldron is cooking well.

But of course, Mageia is a big distro and need lot of people working.

So welcome aboard :)

Whatever field you choose, will be a help. Many of us are working in several fields. Myself in QA, bugsquad, a bit here and on the wiki.

For example there is now the new Nvidia 510 driver coming as backport to Mageia 8 to support newer cards. There are also new kernels pretty frequently both to patch security, and to bring new hardware support.

All Mageia 8 updates (until today over eleven thousand!) and backports (622) released - counting only 64 bit AMD packages.

Cauldron ... is at GNOME 42

GNOME, KDE and XFCE are probably the most popular, so therefore we even have Live ISOs prepared with them.

Even more than 6 are packaged and working :)
