Mageia 8 Release Date

Postby pnbalaji » Jan 22nd, '21, 19:38

Hi,

I know that Mageia 8 in Beta 2. I have few questions. Can someone clarify?

1) Any idea when the final release of Mageia 8 will be available? I am currently running Pop OS, but planning to switch to Mageia as soon as 8 is available.

2) If it is going to take longer, can I install the Beta 2 for now?

3) If I install Beta 2 now, do I need to re-install Mageia 8 when it is released? Or is there a way to upgrade from Beta 2 to Megeia 8 directly?

Thanks,
Balaji.

Hi there, please use regular font size, there's no need to use a huge font size as that is simply distracting.

  1. "when it's ready" - I'd say probably not before end of february
  2. sure, why shouldn't you be able to install it?
  3. this has already been asked several times - no, you just need to make sure to switch away from caudron repositories to Mageia 8 stable.
remove all your repos during the freeze for the final release, after the last release candidate. Afterwards there's usually a grace period of 1 or 2 weeks until cauldron reopens, so you have some time to do it.
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

when Mga8-rc1 is released it will be using Mageia8 online repositories.

by keeping the Mageia8-rc1 up to date, it will automatically roll up to be Mageia8 release, so you will be running Mageia 8 (release) before it is available to download.

Trying the Plasma live cd of Mageia 8 RC.It looks beautiful and functional.

I guess this is using the latest stable repositories, correct? If I install it, it will be automatically updated to Mageia 8 when it is gets released, right?

I have Mageia 8 rc on three machines, one since beta.
A tower, an old laptop, a brand new laptop, and each runs very well.
The newest laptop was having a difficult install with 7, I didnt try to solve them, just DL'd 8 beta.
Quick, so quick, and solid.

I still get a glimpse of the desktop returning from sleep before it screenlocks.
If thats bug report worthy....

That's a bit late, we're already at release candidate stage, with the final probably being released sometime in the next weeks.

I would say do make a bug report, because that is something that can be fixed by updates.
Generally, screen locks have never been implemented securely for various reasons, and that glimpse of desktop is not new, depending on screen locker, DM, DE, graphics, general speed.

I have seen it too on a laptop running xfce.

Please open a bug and post bug no here.
