I read there could be a freeze by now because of the preparation to get to RC status and later to release, but from this topic:

viewtopic.php?f=15&t=13871

it seems some updates should have come through, at least some for the kernel, like: v5.10.6 / v5.10.7 and some for nVidia, like: v460.nnn as is already available for mga7 (this one still gets updates).

Do more people have these issues, or is it my config somehow?

I have received several updates since Jan 5, including kernels 5.10.6 and 5.10.7.

My rig is the cause then.

I have not been using the MCC for the updates, so I don't know if it is working on my system or not.

Crap, now I get a whte screen when logging in: Oops... Something went wrong, etc.
Swapping to tty2 won't even let me login...

Rebooting and starting with the previous kernel I get the same issue.

Mga7 still works, let's see if i can mount the mga8-fs and work from there to check some logfiles...hope that will get me some hints.

That would be expected, as for cauldron the regular updates come from the _release repositories and not from _updates.
I think in drakrpm switching the filter to "All Updates" should give you a similar update functionality as with urpmi --auto-update but I'm not sure as I've not used drakrpm in ages ...

I suspect that GNome got borked during that upgrade via the cli and also Virtualbox acts up: it gets me like 4- or 5-guest services during startup (possibly one for every kernel present?).
Maybe an in-place/update/repair without reformat from the install media from Mga8-beta2 is the fastest way to go?

First of all: Thank you for taking the time to dive into this problem!

Let me try to explain:

It boots into the GUI. I login and the result is a white-screen with a sad smiley. Oops something has gone wrong. etc. (no real useful info in that screen)
So I don't get to see my desktop, only the Mageia-welcome for a short time and then it forces a logout.

During the update from tty2 I saw that some of the gnome packages got updated, but not all by far.
(I guess some dependencies got overlooked?)

There also seems to be an issue with the sound chip according to the above error-messages.

A Vbox-guest process tries to start and fails several times in a row. I can't tell you much since I can't reach my desktop.
syslog nor messages show anything about it.

Maybe I should reconsider a reinstall without a format..... or at least keep my /home somehow.

Well, this is cauldron after all. If you want to reinstall for every single issue that might occur, would you want to reinstall multiple times per week ?

I'd say try any of the other login sessions or maybe install a different desktop environment in the meantime, like XFCE,LXDE or LXQt with their respective task- metapackages.

You could also try to create a new user to see if that user is also affected by the problem, if not it might simply be an issue with a borked setting below ~/.config or such.

Loggin in with a newly created user has the same issue.
Switching to IceWM session also.

With installing LXDE I finally managed to get to a working desktop.

I also installed LXQt and it sort-of got me a desktop, after setting an icons-theme, etc. It seems to be missing some icons in the startmenu and in the quicklaunch-bar/system-tray area.
Verified and afaik all lxqt-packages and pcmanfm(-qt) are available.

I'll stick to LXDE for now.
