I currently have no media, having removed them all in the first command.

My internet is working fine. I am typing this on the very same computer where the mirrors fail.

FWIW if you ping something you cannot prepend the protocol, only use the hostname part for that. And you don't need to do that as root.
Code: Select all
ping mirror.math.princeton.edu

works fine here, although they seem to have taken down their webserver yesterday, maybe for maintenance or something.
If you're really inclined to know, feel free to dig out some contact details and ask them via mail.

mirrors.kernel.org also has problems pretty often due to their DNS load-balancing setup, from past experience.
But you might have tried when the mirror was syncing or was only partially synced, you'd have to try again later or use a different mirror.

Although this is a frequent issue with cauldron, and you should be aware about that if you continue to use cauldron.,

Doktor, thanks for the info on ping.

I pinged princeton again and got past the DNS confusion, but the server still does not reply. Maybe it is still down.

Code: Select all
[poobah@localhost ~]$ ping princeton.edu
PING princeton.edu (140.180.223.22) 56(84) bytes of data.
^C
--- princeton.edu ping statistics ---
17 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 404ms

[poobah@localhost ~]$

I can ping kernel.org

Code: Select all
[poobah@localhost ~]$ ping kernel.org
PING kernel.org (198.145.29.83) 56(84) bytes of data.

The same thing happens with mirror.aarnet.edu.au. It seems strange that they would both fail exactly the same way.

I will try some of the other mirrors to see if it is just a coincidence.

Pinging princeton.edu is a totally different host than mirror.math.princeton.edu and also kernel.org is a different host than mirrors.kernel.org.

I tried to install media using the MCC. I chose ftp://mageia.jameswhitby.net/ to see if the ftp protocol would work. It got most of the way, but then curl errored out on some key files.

Code: Select all
Unable to add medium, errors reported:

problem reading synthesis file of medium "Core Release (distrib1)"
...retrieving failed: curl failed: exited with 19

I tried pinging the other mirror servers, this time providing the complete url.

Both failed in the same way as before.

Am I supplying bad URL's to the commands?

Re: Cannot connect to Princeton mirror

This keeps getting crazier.

I went back to the MCC to try jameswhitby using the http protocol.

When I clicked on the Add button, it automatically set up "Mirror list" as it did when I first installed the OS. But this time, instead of Mirror list using princeton, it used james whitby.

Code: Select all
[root@localhost poobah]# urpmq --list-url

This install also missed some files.

Code: Select all

I am running in circles and not sure what I am looking at anymore.

This system is my testing system, so I am more interested in figuring out how this all works than I am in getting the system working again.

Thanks for the help in understanding this.

Update: I see what I did. I should have used the File=>Add specific media mirror instead of the Add button. Duh.

Although this is a frequent issue with cauldron, and you should be aware about that if you continue to use cauldron.

I am going to mark this issue RESOLVED. My current setup using jameswhitby is updating. I see that princeton is back in the list at http://mirrors.mageia.org/status. So I guess whatever happened to the servers is resolved.

I was fully aware that since Mageia 8 is in beta, the software would be flaky. I did not know that the servers would be flaky as well, So, lesson learned.

The upside is that I learned quite a bit about how to set up and manage the repositories. I will be much more comfortable in the future taking care of those issues as they arise.

Thanks for the explanations.

What you're running is not Mageia 8 beta, it is Cauldron.
