Since about Sep 22 my attempts to install updates fail with invalid MD5SUM errors.

I thought that it might be a problem with the mirrors, so I tried to change the mirror list using the MCC. That also failed with errors:

You don't mention what mirror you picked instead ?

In any case, your initial mirror is in a bad state, see http://mirrors.mageia.org/status
Pick one from that list that is close to you geographically, and which is either light green or green.

Here is the one that I chose. It shows up light green on the mirrors page.

OK, but did you try other mirrors?

just used =>
Code: Select all
http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/mageia/distrib/cauldron/i586/
and it is ok
not using the x86-64 mirror on this unit so cannot confirm if working.

you could try this from a root terminal
Code: Select all
urpmi.removemedia -a
urpmi.addmedia --distrib 'http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/mageia/distrib/cauldron/$ARCH'

please post back any errors

It is interesting that the mirror "http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/mageia" shows up red on the mirrors page.

Edit: I ran urpmi --auto-update and the updates came through with no errors. So that mirror works fine with x86_64

I am a little puzzled about how to go about choosing a mirror since the aarnet mirror was red on the mirror page, and the "http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/mageia/" mirror is green, but it didn't work. It looks like it involves a bit of trial and error.

The aarnet seems to work, so I will mark this solved.

If you have any tips on how you go about choosing a mirror they would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the pointers.

aarnet is my preferred, if a slightly old, mirror.
if something is 'iffy' by an update by developers, usually it is fixed before aarnet gets its update

when I need to use a more up to date mirror - princeton is my usual choice.

Tip: When adding mirrors, it is usually best just to have the one set enabled.
remove all others beforehand

I noted that you removed a bucket load of repos (135).
In the past, I have had issues with a 'core' medium, so I disabled that one repo medium and added another set and only enabled the 'core' medium from the new set.

note: please add back the
Code: Select all
medium "google-chrome"
which has been removed

It is interesting that it removed a bucked load of repos since I have not messed with the mirrors at all. This is a straight Mageia8 alpha 1 installation followed by doing all the updates. As far as I remember, it was using MIRRORLIST as set by default.

Thanks for the reminder to reinstall google chrome. I had forgotten that.
