[SOLVED]Boot failure after latest update

Postby banjo » Aug 12th, '20, 17:44

After the latest update, my computer will no longer boot into graphics. It displays the error shown in the image below.

From the update log, it looks as though the Nvidia driver has failed to build correctly.

As the lensfun lens database receives updates on an ongoing basis it is
recommended that you run /usr/bin/lensfun-update-data periodically to
get those updates locally. Do this as root to update the data in the system
location for all users, or as a normal user to update only for that user.

You should restart your computer for kernel-desktop-5.8.0-2.mga8

Has anyone else seen this problem?

Any tips on how to get the graphics working again?

Thanks,

Two options:
1. Switch to the nouveau driver (you can run drakx11 from the text login prompt). Actually I'm surprised this wasn't done automatically - have you disabled the mandriva-everytime service?
2. Boot with the previous kernel.

Every new Linux release breaks the NVIDIA proprietary drivers. Hopefully someone will come up with a fix soon. But nvidia340 is no longer supported by NVIDIA, so eventually it is going to be beyond repair.

I did reboot with the previous kernel, and I got the same failure to boot to graphics. That trick has worked for me in the past, but not this time.

When I first installed Mag8 it was running OK using nouveau, which appears to be much improved over previous releases. But blender would not work at all without the proprietary drivers. Also, it sounds like nouveau runs the graphics card fan full bore all the time. When the proprietary drivers kick in, I can hear it quiet down. I don't know how long the graphics card will last running like that. It is an old computer.

I will see if I can get drakx11 going to set it up for nouveau so I can at least get back up for further testing.

Thanks for the pointers.

I ran XFdrake and set the system up to use the nouveau driver. When I rebooted, the system hung up again trying to start the graphics mode again. I confirmed the nouveau driver setting by looking through the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

When I log in on the CLI and run startx I get the errors shown in the image on my first post. I am suspicious of the error at the top of the screen.

That file also does not exist on my working Mag7 computer, so I don't know if that is relevant or not. What makes me suspicious is the list of errors at the end:

Code: Select all
(EE) Fatal server error:
(EE) no screens found
(EE)
(EE) Please consult the Mageia support for additional information.
(EE)
(EE) Server terminated with error (1). Closing log file .Xorg.0.log
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit: server error

"Connection refused" looks like an authorization issue.

What is file .severauth.16116, and is that relevant to this problem?

Re: Boot failure after latest update

Postby banjo » Aug 13th, '20, 16:44

I moved the file .Xauthority to get it out of the way and tried again. It created a new .Xauthority file that is empty. The Xsystem still does not run.

I edited /usr/bin/startx and disabled the flag that invokes the authority, e.g.

Code: Select all
enable_xauth=1
   changed to
enable_xauth=0

startx now fails but without the errors relating to the files .serverauth and .Xauthority. It fails saying "no screens found" as before.

Boot Failure of X server
20200813_102241.jpg (1.87 MiB) Viewed 3943 times

This does not appear to be a driver problem because it fails with nouveau as well as with nvidia.
It does not appear to be a security problem because I have turned the authorization off.

I am not sure where to look next. I will check the file /usr/bin/X to see what is going on there.

Re: Boot failure after latest update

I now have the system running with graphics using the nouveau drivers.

I noticed in the screenshot of the failed call to startx that in the Kernel command line "nokmsboot" is set. That will keep the nouveau driver from loading.

Here is the /etc/default/grub file:

Code: Select all
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash quiet noiswmd resume=UUID=b7073cd9-5849-4807-80e5-60cbcc78b2d0 audit=0 vga=788"
GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=false
GRUB_DISABLE_RECOVERY=false
GRUB_DISABLE_SUBMENU=n
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=Mageia
GRUB_ENABLE_CRYPTODISK=y
GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768x32
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text
GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true
GRUB_TERMINAL_OUTPUT=gfxterm
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10

The nokmsboot flag is not there.

Here is the /boot/grub2/grub.cfg file

The nokmsboot flag is all through those command lines.

Apparently, XFdrake did not call update-grub.

So I did that.... I ran update-grub and here is the result

There is no "nokmsboot" flag.

It boots normally now into the graphics using nouveau.

However..... every time it boots it reports that it is building the nvidia 340 driver, which tells me that the driver build is failing.

According to my update logs, the system went from kernel-desktop-devel-5.7.12-1.mga8 to kernel-desktop-devel-5.8.0-2.mga8 in the previous update. Perhaps there is a bug or an incompatibility between the new kernel and the nvidia drivers.

I am currently installing another update to the kernel. Once that is done, I will attempt to set it back to using the proprietary drivers and see if this is an issue that has been seen and addressed in the kernel.
If only the best bird sang, the forest would be a very quiet place.

How do I figure out why the nvidia build is failing?

Re: Boot failure after latest update

You are the second person I've seen report problems because update-grub2 hasn't been called after switching to the nouveau driver. Could you check the system log for the first boot after you installed the 5.8 series kernel to see if service_harddrake tried to automatically switch to the nouveau driver (because the nvidia340 driver failed to build) but failed to finish the job for some reason.

As for seeing why the dkms build failed, the build logs can be found under /var/lib/dkms. Yes, there's almost certainly an incompatibility between the nvidia340 driver and the 5.8 series kernels. There was with the 5.7 series kernels, the 5.6 series kernels, the 5.5 series kernels... Each time we have to wait for someone to figure out a patch for the nvidia340 driver to get it going again.

I retrieved the boot log after the installation of the new kernel. It did switch to the nouveau driver.

Here are the relevant lines from the log.

This appears to me to be not a very good fallback strategy if grub is not changed to take out nokmsboot. It will simply not work regardless.

Here is the end of the dmks build log where it bails out with some syntax errors.

Those are syntax errors in the source code. How did this get out the door?

Thanks for the pointers to this information. It helps me understand what is going on.

Not sure where to report this problem. I believe this is Nvidia code, is that correct?

It's already known that the drivers are broken, as Martin mentioned, this usually happens on every kernel update.

I see that there are a couple of bugs in bugzilla about nvidia340 and nvidia390 for both kernels 5.7 and 5.8.

I am running OK under nouveau now. When the patches come out I will reinstate the nvidia drivers and give it a test run.

This appears to me to be not a very good fallback strategy if grub is not changed to take out nokmsboot. It will simply not work regardless.

It's supposed to remove nokmsboot, and I've seen it do so in the past. I'll take a look to see if I can figure out why it's not working now.

If you need any more information let me know. I only posted a small snippet out of the log.

Having blown the dust off my old NVIDIA graphics card, I think I have reproduced the problem. I see the same messages from service_harddrake as you, but then further on in the log I see this:
Code: Select all
Aug 15 10:31:37 localhost service_harddrake[3113]: running: update-grub2

and later still:
Code: Select all
Aug 15 10:33:37 localhost service_harddrake[3113]: ERROR: killing runaway process (process=update-grub2, pid=3140, args=, error=ALARM at /usr/lib/libDrakX/run_program.pm line 235.

Could you check if you have the same.

Oops. My bad. I looked a bit farther down in the log and saw the same call to update-grub2 and the same killing of the runaway process.

Good, we're seeing the same bug then. I've found the cause, and it should be fixed in the next release of drakxtools.

I can run a test here if you would like. The computer I am doing this on is not being used for anything but testing, so breaking the nvidia drivers again to see if the nouveau rescue works is not a problem.

To test the fix, in /usr/lib/libDrakX/bootloader.pm, change line 2109 from
Code: Select all
    run_program::rooted($::prefix, 'update-grub2', '2>', \$error) or die "update-grub2 failed: $error";

to
Code: Select all
    run_program::rooted($::prefix, 'grub2-mkconfig', '2>', \$error, '-o', '/boot/grub2/grub.cfg') or die "grub2-mkconfig failed: $error";

Re: Boot failure after latest update

I ran the test, and it worked. I did not think that I could use legitimate channels to switch back to the proprietary Nvidia drivers since they will not build on the system. So I lied to it. I put nokmsboot back into /etc/default/grub and ran update-grub2. Then I edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf and told it to use the nvidia driver instead of nouveau.

I put the changes you posted into the bootloader.pm script and rebooted. The computer rebooted, trying to build the nvidia drivers, and posted a curses dialog on the screen saying that it had to reboot for a driver change. After the second reboot, it came up with graphics. I was not left with the black screen of death this time.

Here are the relevant sections of the boot log.

The following comes from the first boot where the switch was done:

So it looks like your fix to bootloader.pm has worked.

I will wait to mark this solved because the original problem, that the nvidia drivers won't build, is still there. Or we could start another thread about that.

Having a fallback that leaves the system bootable is a huge benefit. Good work.

Re: Boot failure after latest update

Postby banjo » Aug 17th, '20, 16:58

I installed the latest update. When I rebooted, it did not attempt to rebuild nvidia340 again, which I took as a good sign. So I switched back to the proprietary nvidia drivers and it works fine.

I am marking this solved.

Thanks for the great support.
