[SOLVED]hp-plugin fails when installing HP P1102W Laserjet

Postby banjo » Dec 31st, '18, 03:52

I am trying to install my HP P1102W laserjet printer and it is failing. I have done this on Mageia 3, Mageia5 and Mint 18.1. I have always been able to get it working, but I cannot on Mageia 7 beta.

The printer needs a plugin to work, so I have to install it using hp-setup to get the plugin downloaded and installed. I have run hp-setup as both root and user, and it fails in all cases with an error saying that it needs the plugin and that I should run hp-plugin as a regular user. So I did that. That program failed as well.

Here is the output from the terminal when I ran hp-setup as a normal user.

Code: Select all
[poobah@localhost ~]$ hp-setup

Anybody know what is going on here?

Anybody know what the name of the plugin is so I can look for it? The hp-plugin tool does not give the name of the file or where it was stored, other than "plugin_tmp".

Anybody know where the installed plugin is supposed to go so that I can look into it?

Thanks

The plugin might end up temporarily in /var/lib/hp and maybe /var/log/hp/tmp might contains some logs.

You can also run the plugin installation in verbose/debug mode via hp-plugin -g which might maybe provide some additional hints. This should also show the complete URLs from where the plugin is downloaded.
Try also to run it as root.

Doktor5000,
Thank you for the link. I checked it out and didn't see any quick answers. I did find the P1102W printer and confirmed that my HPLIP version is high enough.

I actually did run hp-setup as root the first time I tried it, and it failed. The error message that it posted said to run it as a normal user, which I did, and then it requested the root password and then it failed.

The good news is that I did finally get hp-setup to work. The secret sauce was to run it without the GUI and as root.

Code: Select all
# hp-setup -i

hp-setup defaults to running with the GUI. I don't know why running it with a GUI would cause failure, but apparently it does.

So, the answer to the question of how to install the HP printers that need the plugin is to log in as root and run hp-setup -i. That switch takes you through the whole setup in a text-only console.
