So, I installed Mageia 6 STA1 on my HP cloudbook. AFter doing a urpmi --auto-update, I tried to copy some files from an external USB drive to my home drive. AFter they showed finished copying, I unmounted the USB drive and tried to untar one of the files, to discover that copy (using the copy command in Nemo, running cinnamon obviously) craeted symlinks. So I hooked up the drive again, deleted all the links, and tried again, this time from command line, using cp. And again, I ended up with symlinks. Is this an installation issue or has it been seen before (everything else seems to be working)?

Not an installation issue, and never seen that before.
Although as you don't show some actual output and the exact commands you used it's hard to tell what happened.
