mga6 sta1 - Virtualbox - problem with GNOME edition

After installing a GNOME 32-bit guest under Virtualbox using the classic DVD, I get a graphical login prompt, but when I try to log-in to the GNOME Session, the session immediately dies and brings me back to the graphical login prompt.

Even after doing a full upgrade from Core Updates and Nonfree Updates, this problem continues to exist.
This does not affect the 64-bit GNOME install.

EDIT: The 64-bit edition is also affected, but I only encountered the problem after doing a full software update.

You can try to disable 3D and 2D acceleration in the VM settings before you start the VM.
Also, does the classic mode work which you can select in the login manager?

3D and 2D acceleration is disabled by default, judging by the un-checked boxes in the Monitor section of the VirtualBox settings for that machine.

I cannot start GNOME Classic, I get the same result as with regular GNOME session.

EDIT: I tried the 32bit non-free network installer with the GNOME desktop. Same problem. I did find that you can log in successfully using "GNOME on Wayland" on the 64bit classic install, the 32bit classic install and the network install. Also I tried both the Live GNOME images, and they work fine.
