mga6 sta1 - Virtualbox - X Fails to Start For Some Desktops

Hello,

Under virtualbox, I installed from the classic 32bit DVD. After the reboot, I got a text-only screen that said there was a problem starting the Graphical Session. It said to run drakx11, and I did, but none of the options seemed likely to produce a fix, and the "Test" button returned EE errors from the X server.

Here is the Xorg.0.log after trying drakx11:

This was a 32bit MATE desktop install. I haven't seen if other desktop choices have this same problem or not.

EDIT: I tried another install selecting the LXDE desktop: and exactly the same problem occured. So this appears to affect any 32bit install.

Hello ca-on-adam,

Have you installed Oracle virtual box extensions? [ https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads ]

edit: you may need to reboot afterwards

Hi
I think you get the same problem I get in the beginning of July. The error depends on to early/fast update of Mageia 6 sta1 after the that the repository was updated.
I reported it as bug 18892 and get the advice to wait so the repository will be updated.
I get the same error today.
This time I have to do a clean installation followed by an update.
My advise is to restore a backup and wait one day before update.

I have never needed the virtualbox extensions, and I have installed many many Linux guests under virtualbox with success. The extensions are not related to the X server. This will not fix the problem.

Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack:
Support for USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 devices, VirtualBox RDP and PXE boot for Intel cards.

Same here.

This is correct.

How-ever I had a very very similar problem a few days ago.
drakx11 was unable to determine a valid configuration.
I also attempted other forms of correction.
In a final "what have I got to loose", adding extensions fixed the problem for me.
I may have rebooted at this time :)
I then reinstalled the guest Mga6 system without issue
(I use Mga5 x86_64 as host)

I just did a full update with "Core Updates" and "Nonfree Updates" enabled. It did not fix the problem.

I will try this if no other solutions are found. I really don't like this solution because the 64-bit version works fine without installing that pack on the host, therefore this 32-bit version should work too.

If installing VB extensions corrects the issue for you,

please append https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19032, and change to "re-opened".
add your Xorg.0.log to the bug also.

thank you

this I do not know.

however the extension pack also adds VirtualBox RDP support.

And how is RDP support for virtualbox related to your X server ?

I have found a workaround as mentioned in https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18917.

I created a file /etc/modprobe.d/vboxvideo.conf with the contents "blacklist vboxvideo", then rebooted.

It seems that there are two entities called vboxvideo, one is a kernel module (lowercase) and one is an X.org driver (VBoxVideo with capitals). When the kernel module vboxvideo is loaded, X fails to load VBoxVideo, and then fails to find a screen. I'm not sure what the fix is to this problem.

And I did not need to install Virtualbox Extensions.

EDIT: I just installed another 64-bit guest (with MATE desktop instead of KDE), and had this problem. So it affects 32-bit and 64-bit guests. The choice of desktop seems to determine whether the problem occurs.

Problem is with old deprecated xorg.conf i removed it and then xorg started without errors.

As a matter of fact, now xorg.conf is deprecated

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... 175497699/

Mageia should think to move to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/*-.conf files what is readed first then old xorg.conf,it works but not supported officially anymore.

That suggestion goes to whom? And you're aware the wiki can be edited by anyone with an identity.mageia.org account?

I meant to suggest the one with fresh view on the subject to share.
(Yes and i have both created and edited articles, while i was dealing with a subject and felt i had a fresh view of it, i.e owncloud.)
