Re https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Feature:Migr ... orkManager

Can i please make a plea that network manager is not the default
and that it remains an option in mga6.

Even redhat has allowed for its complete removal in redhat 7 due to
cries of dismay from SA's and administrators.

its well known in the SA community as network mangler, just google to get a general perspective on the feeling out there.

already it misconfiguration my first install of mga6, and had to disable it just to be able to get a sensible working network.

So far there has been no further progress to make it the default.

But you should consider that our network stack (net_applet, draknetcenter, drakroam and to some extent drakconnect) is not really maintained since years and has quite a lot of issues which hits the majority of users, simply take a look at the hundreds of threads here in forums regarding wireless and network issues. networkmanager usually works much better, it's well-maintained upstream and it's widely used and documented better. For all the instances where our network stack didn't work, switching to only using networkmanager worked out for our users.

And I'm not agreeing that networkmanager is known as a network mangler in generally. Using it since several years on Mageia, and at work on RHEL 6 & 7 workstations.
Also cannot really agree with the other part, if you don't want to use it, you don't have to remove it completely. Simply disable it and setup static network configuration as previously, e.g. on servers where networkmanager is not really needed.

Apart from that, even if you install it on Mageia, it will not be enabled by default currently, so you'd have to provide some more details about the misconfiguration you mention for your mga6 install.

Works fine here execpt i don't use any applets lxqt one is not ready yet and gtk one is crap,i only use it with 4g cdc_ether modem so cnetworkmanager is enough.
I don't have nothing against networkmanager to be default as it's working lot more better with my connection than draknet.

Dear Doktor, I did not say you have to remove it to disable it, just suggested redhat has now removed the dependency in redhat 7 that allows you to remove it completely

as for it working on workstations on redhat 7, if that workstation is setup like a laptop, yes it works, try and do teaming or bonding with it, and the last time i tried (7.0) its a mess.

I also do bonding on my mageia workstation i use the kde applet on top of the static bonding config to apply vpn, for torguard etc no problem at all.

i also use the kde applet to manage the wireless on my laptop, and i cant disagree more with the general view that it has issues, ive never found a more reliable
network config tool ever, across many different wireless network adapters, but i always make sure the ones i use are not done through some kind of win32 driver,
if thats the only option, the card gets yanked from the laptop and replaced.

redhat is just starting to listen to the feedback from customers, myself included, that this is not a popular tool, and have acknowledged that in discussions we have had.

and im hoping that like so many things in the opensource world, there will be a better tool round the corner that will replace it soon.

regards peter

Remain this you use Cauldron these kind of problems are very common, all configurations are done later in development cycle not in dev1 release.

For the latter part, that could really be the case as networkmanager only gained better support for that (also for bridging etc.) in later versions after 1.x - I can take a look but our boxes don't have the hardware so I could easily test bonding,
although we're already using 7.2 so things might be a little different and slightly more recent there. But thanks for pointing that out, noted.

Just for clarification, by kde applet do you mean plasma-applet-nm, or are you talking about our own net_applet ?

For some parts, I didn't really get the context or the message - are you saying that networkmanager's kde applet works well for you, but networkmanager in general is not really a popular tool?

And for the last part, there aren't that many general purpose network managers, only other widely used one would be wicd, which also has its own issues, and which isn't really maintained anymore.
And I don't see any other userspace tool coming round the corner ... I'd also love to see one that "simply works" but we probably have to stick with the devil we know :|
