In MDV there were packages (in PLF) of Google Earth that downloads the installer binary from google and install it in the system. Does Skype (and Adobe as well, for Flash) allows this kind of installation since Mga do not redistribute packages itself but uses Skype (or Adobe) distribution channels ?

By working, I mean :
- Can instant message
- Can call a person
- Can make a video call with sb

The old one was not working : it don't allow me to connect and loops on "signing in" ...

I'm looking for a rpm of skype 2.2.

The 2.1 version from MIB works fine, but when I try to install the 2.2, I got this error message :

Any news from skype or any way to be compatible with fedora or open suse rpm ?

I'm using fedora skype package (official) on 64 system.
It works well (except it steals the sound output for itself ...)
You shoud install it using

cd thedirectorywhereisskypepackage
urpmi skypepackagename --nodeps

And download dependancies if needed after by executing skype and getting the missing shared libs.

Here you have a spec file to construct a 'neutral rpm for Skype' :

Neutral rpm ?
-> skype licence does not allow distribution of skype binary.
-> So, we don't provide it (rpm contains only a script, not skype binary, nor any skype's file)

install rpm :
-> it download the latest version of Skype, ever
-> it works egal for 32 and 64bits (use of dynamic version, and latest beta : 32b)
-> dependancies are solved into rpm
-> could be re-used when skype have an update available

This is not perfect, of course, but a simple and legal way, for all.
And .. it works ! (latest version of skype, on 32 and 64, on kde or gnome, with or without pulseaudio)

For those who not want wait for idea acceptance, spec corrections, and rpm availability, you could :
as root :
# urpmi rpmbuild

as user :
$ wget https://bugs.mageia.org/attachment.cgi?id=378
$ mv attachment.cgi?id=378 ~/rpm/SPECS/skype-installer.spec
$ cd ~/rpm/SPECS/
$ rpmbuild skype-installer.spec

Finally, as root, install rpm (in user home... rpm/RPMS/)

As where it is for free PC to PC video and voice calls, and for integration of all your IM contacts, one could take a chance with QuteCom for example.

Personnally i dont use skype : I use Gtalk for long time ago, now.

For Skype, friends migration from skype to others, for many people : "can not be a snap", so rather than rushing to propose a better solution in the meantime.

First : Microsoft is going to merge skype and MSN, so it's the end of skype for Linux.
Second : Microsoft is going to merge skype and msn, so it's the beginning of MSN on Linux.

I don't think Microsoft is going to stop the skype linux dev soon. And even if they do that, the last version should work for years before they can update all skype installation.
For the moment, I really like the idea of the dummy RPM. It seems to be a way to resolv the licence issue, and to have skype in the usual installation process.
How does that work if you uninstall it ? Can you ask the RPM to remove all files from a list, or are you limited to the skype installer ?

How does that work if you uninstall it ?

urpme skype-installer : clean the system : .desktop files (skype.dekstop and skype-installer.desktop) + the skype-installer script + the dir of skype itself. So, yes we could use urpme skype-installer to remove totally skype.

Personally, I hate skype, but I have to use it ... I'm looking for a free alternative. GTalk was a good candidate, but I do not consider something coming from google to be open source ...
Any advices ?

As i told just before, QuteCom is a nice alternative.
But not (yet) in the Mageia-repositories, as far as i know.
Installed it in Mandriva just an hour ago, and works well.
Only, it is NOT Skype, and you must create a (free) SIP-account.
There are some providers that can provide you such an account.

Qutcom is a revamp of an old 9Telecom excellent client. (which i used severals times, many years ago, with a "payme_support" account too : good service idea)
Is the new version is really usefull ? Not so easy, i see.

Except if microsoft refuse to develop a new version for Linux, I don't think people are going to use something else only for this reason. Who cares the owner if the service works fine. Microsoft is not the north corea government.

Is there any new from the team about the previsous idea ? If it's works fine and if there is no licence issues, we should put it in repositories asap shouldn't we ?
