I installed Mag10 again from the Live ISO, reformatting the entire disk, and that failed as well. The computer did not see a bootable disk and went directly into the BIOS.
But then, I accidentally found the answer. When installing grub, there is an option in the dialog, "install in /EFI/BOOT (removable device or workaround for some BIOSs)"

With my motherboard, I have to check that option to get the installation to work. I just took a guess and tried it, and it worked. I had skipped over it because I am not installing on a removable device. I guess my BIOS is one that needs a workaround.
So if you have this motherboard,
- Code: Select all
MSI MPG Z490 GAMING EDGE WIFI LGA 1200 Intel Z490 SATA 6Gb/s ATX
Intel Motherboard
(no longer available on Newegg) you have to install grub in /EFI/BOOT, whatever that means.
Anyway, I am marking this solved.
Thanks for all the pointers and info. I got a lot of practice installing Mageia over the last few days. It doesn't seem so intimidating anymore.
