[SOLVED]X Server Crashes When Booting

Postby banjo » Mar 11th, '22, 21:40

Since an update I installed on March 10, the X server now crashes leaving me with a blank, black screen.

Inxi information:

The entire log file is attached as well.

The interesting line in the log is

"[ 53.185] (EE) Illegal instruction at address 0x7f137ecb3168"

That address shows up in the backtrace in nouveau_dri.so

"[ 53.179] (EE) 2: /usr/lib64/dri/nouveau_dri.so (nouveau_drm_screen_create+0x1a72a8) [0x7f137ecb3168]
"
so I am guessing that this is something wrong with nouveau.

The update installed lib64drm_nouveau2 2.4.110 2.mga9 x86_64

Checking the current version of the nouveau driver with rpm:

Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep nouveau
lib64drm_nouveau2-2.4.110-2.mga9
x11-driver-video-nouveau-1.0.17-4.mga9

I have done a couple of subsequent updates since then, but nothing has fixed the problem.

I searched bugzilla and didn't see anything calling out this issue.

The Nvidia proprietary driver has been discontinued for my old card, so I am using Nouveau. Now that Nouveau is crashing, the system is pretty useless.

This is my experimental system, so there is no crisis. But it would be nice to figure out what is going on and get the computer back working again.

Thanks
Banjo

This is likely related to the ongoing update to gcc12 in cauldron. You should check dev mailing list. Please mention in the applicable thread that there may be a problem with noveau/gcc12/really old NVIDIAs. Point them to this forum thread. Thanks.

I tried logging in to the mailing list server and it rejected my password.

Hello,
There is a bunch of updates this morning, with in particular glibc, gcc, mesa.
My VM in cauldron didn"t start in graphical mode, but now, it's OK. Do you know how to update with command line?

I did use my email address, not user name. I logged into bugzilla using the same password and it works fine. I am logged into the forum with the same ID and password. When I attempt to log into the mailing list server using my email address and password it is rejected. I just tried again, and it rejected my password again. Very strange.

Do you know how to update with command line?

Yes, I do. Thanks for the suggestion. I have already done two updates since the problem arose. I will boot the computer and see if the latest update will fix it.

OK. My third attempt at updates worked, and the graphics are back. I guess this was a known problem that got fixed. I still cannot log into the mailing list server, and that makes it difficult to follow these issues. I did find the page, https://ml.mageia.org/l/info/bugs, that presents me with a form to subscribe to that list, but I don't know what the story is behind that page or how it relates to the other page. It does give me access to the archives, so I can skim through that on occasion.

Thanks for the help. I will mark this solved.

FYI I solved the mystery of not being able to log into the message list server.

When I first signed up for this forum I used a yahoo email address to set it up. After yahoo became unusable, I switched the forum over to a gmail address, which is now where I receive notices from the forum.

However, when I logged into identity.mageia.org I saw that it still has the yahoo address as my official address. The identity.mageia.org data appears to be decoupled from the forum setting, and there seems to be no way to change it. Anyway, I can log into the mailing list now using the yahoo address, so all is good. I might go ahead and subscribe using the yahoo address for the list since I don't use yahoo much anymore and I can divert the avalanche of emails away from my SPAM-choked gmail address.

Thanks to all for the pointers and help.
