Can't configure Pager & two minor problems

Postby John66 » Apr 19th, '11, 05:21

Congratulations for your work so far. I'm really impressed with beta 1, although I had not the time to use it a lot, because I installed it 5 times due to the problem no.3 I will describe below.
Installation, update to KDE 4.6.2 & installation of proprietary nvidia drivers was really fast, maybe less than 60 minutes. After all that, I came to this problem:

1. The pager plasma applet, on the panel, shows an icon (little square) of only one (1) virtual desktop. I can't configure it, neither from pager settings (right click), nor from "configure your desktop".
After a a lot of repeated attempts from pager settings or from "add another virtual desktop" (right click on the pager icon) maybe I get two or three virtual desktops, but not a forth one.
From "configure your desktop" I can add, for example, 4 virtual desktops, but the pager icon shows 1, 2 or 3 and I can change between these that are present in the pager plasma applet.
On the next boot there's again only one (1) desktop.
Has anyone else experienced that? Is there a workaround? Or is it a bug?

2. Before the installation of the nvidia proprietary drivers, when I went for reboot, shut down or log out, when the notification window (to verify the action I wanted) appeared in the center of the screen,
the background was distorted, corrupted, most of it black with small, short white lines and portions of image. As I said before, after installing the nvidia drivers, the problem went away, but I thought
it is better to report it (I'm not an experienced user, sorry if it is pointless) maybe the developers would find it useful, because: Some of these times, the distorted background was images from applications
I have closed some minutes ago (e.g. firefox or dolphin) and once was portions of my Mandriva desktop (Mandriva is installed in another physical hard drive!!!!!!!!!!).

3. I installed mageia beta-1 in the second (internal) sata hard drive. I chose "grub with graphical menu". When I boot (every time) I get the following message (or error?):
root (hd1,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
chainloader +1

GRUB loading stage 2...
low memory 0x02feb0 - 0x63f30 (213120 bytes)
Press any key to continue...

(I believe, the last three lines are important)
I press a key, it goes on with a line or two with similar messages (about gfxmenu) , then I press a key again, it advances more lines, finally grub appears with graphical menu. Totally I have to press six or seven times a key from the keyboard.
I spend three days of my life searching to various forums and posts, way back to 2004, reinstalling and changing the menu.lst, but I couldn't find a solution. The same problem appears with Mandriva 2011 beta1.1
and with one of the MIB's 2012-live dvd's. Other distributions I have, are without graphical menu on grub, to test if they behave the same. If I don't choose graphical menu for grub, there is no problem. Is there anyone with an answer for this?
I'm almost sure it is not a hardware problem. Anyone came upon this problem and find a workaround?

Thanks in advance for any answer.

Other than that, everything I tested so far (everyday use) went ok... and fast!
I miss some service menus, but I understand there's still some road ahead for the packagers.

Sorry for the long post.

Thanks mageia, for a very promising distro.

An update, since there's no answer yet:
1. The problem with the "pager widget" got fixed after last night's updates. Thanks, mageia developers.
2. A similar problem like, the one I describe in the post above, happens when I try to change the size of the Konsole window (but not to any other application, only Konsole).
Also, the mouse pointer freezes for some seconds, when trying to resize the Konsole window (from the grip at the lower right corner). Very weird.....
I managed to capture it through recordmydesktop. If anyone is interested, I could upload it.
3. I decided to install openSUSE 11.4 :? (just for a few hours, since it's another distro that have grub with graphical menu). I installed it in another physical hard disk, different from the one that I installed mageia-beta1, actually to the one
that's installed Mandriva 2010.2. Same behaviour, same message.
So, it seems that is not a hardware problem or mageia-Mandriva grub problem. It seems that from a grub with graphical menu (Mandriva 2010.0) is not possible to chainload another grub with graphical menu (mageia, Mandriva, openSUSE).
Maybe it's a "software" or hardware "limitation"!!!...
Still can't find an answer....
