megeia 5 rc no option offered to setup uefi (solved)

Postby wintpe » May 9th, '15, 13:56

so i started installing mageia 5 on my asus zenbook a uefi capable laptop.

at no time did mageia prompt me with any offer of uefi options, which i kind of expected

im assuming now that it wont unless it already finds something on the disk, that is uefi,
but what about those that might want or need to install from scratch, new disk for example , uefi and mageia only (ie no windows)

regards peter

Two obvious questions come up. First, UEFI-capable does not actually mean that UEFI boot is enabled and preferred.
If you do not boot in UEFI mode, you cannot do an UEFI installation, simple as that.
The second, how did you create the boot media, and which media did you use?

Apart from that, there is currently only two slight indicators on whether you booted in UEFI mode or in legacy mode on systems that support both,
one thing should be that the bootloader should look differently, it's grub-efi similar to grub2:

The other is that in UEFI mode the usual F1-F6 keys in bootloader are not present: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_5_Err ... egacy_mode

Its all OK, what i was suprised about was that I expected an option in the installer

however it was just like the old installer, i mean beta 3 in that it just went ahead,

so thers me thinking, have i missed something.

when it had finished i did an fdisk -l and sure enough theres a 300 meg efiboot partition.

A quick zip to the bios, change it from compatibility mode to boot from efi deveice

and bingo mageia 5 is working with efi, just puuuuurrrrrfect

Good to hear. Actually a huge amount of time was put in beefing up the UEFI support in installer and on the boot media during the 9 internal RC candidates and before.
