Test Run - M3 RC - VBOX4.2.8 - Canada locale

Postby ca-on-adam » May 2nd, '13, 08:18

I used Virtualbox 4.2.8 for this test:

-Vbox running on Windows 7 system
-VM built-in profile 'Mandriva' with 512MB RAM allocated
-Media: Mageia 3 RC Installer CD (the 700MB one)
-I saw no reason to download the 4GB DVD, I'm only a basic tester.
-I set no internet available during install

Here are the settings used for this install:

-English(Canada)
-US Keyboard
-Selected ALL the software sets (just to see if any problems arose...)
-Did not enable individual package selection
-Consumed 1 bottle of beer during the process
-Configured Monitor (Vbox default screen) as "Plug'n'Play"
-did not choose to install updates, internet access disabled

I will post further successes as I play around with it. If there are any particular tasks I should try with this system, please let me know and I'll try as much as I can.

Feed the bottle of beer to the system, does that help?
anyways, cheers :)

What is this system's menu supposed to look like?

I chose to install a lot of software, but the LXDE menu is rather empty. I would have expected other menu items, such as "Internet", "Games", "Office" etc. Is it supposed to be this way?

The only explanation I can think of, is the installer on this CD is actually for the DVD, and so many of the package options in the installer menu do not have the corresponding packages on disk?

I remember installing the "games" set, but /usr/games/ is totally empty.

Mageia 3 RC under VirtualBox. Installed with the 700MB CD, the LXDE menu is rather sparse.

You are correct. You would need Internet access to install more than a very basic system using what is called the "dual-arch" CD.

Well, but shouldn't the installer offer only those packages which are contained in the currently configured repos?
If it offers all packages, and the user chooses them, but they won't get installed, and there's no feedback to the user about this,
i'd call that a bug.

I responded to that bug report. Looks like its been an issue for a while.

Probably should add a note to the download page saying that this CD is very minimal -- it says so on the wiki link mentioned earlier in this thread. Other noobs like me will have the same confusion, esp. with the misleading software selection in the installer.

Maybe I could learn to disable the menu items in the installer? I'd love to contribute to the final release and this *might* be doable by editing config files and such. I could put a day or two into it. But something tells me it would be better to have a feature that 'scans' the CD and automatically enables/disables menu items, in case a later release of the same CD has a modified package set.

Or more flexible, would be to allow extras to be enabled, but warn the user with a pop-up message saying that the set will need to be downloaded in order to install, and later a warning message if the package failed to download.

Thanks for the suggestion to add some text, I will add 'only a minimal list of packages'
For changing the compssuser.pl see http://svnweb.mageia.org/packages/cauld ... iew=markup, particallary the "required => "
http://svnweb.mageia.org/packages/cauld ... rev=388363 but it's too late for mga3 now I think.
(I have no commit right in soft svn)

With every release the dual arch CD becomes increasingly minimal, until now there is scarcely anything on it at all. It really should be used in conjunction with an online source in which case all packages become available.

I hope when we get to mga4 it will become either a single arch CD with more on it, or a dual arch DVD.

It is too late now to put a 'required, package in the Games section for mga3, but at least it is better now than mga2 was, where users were trying to use the dual arch CD to install desktops and were wondering why it did not work.
