(SOLVED) CPU fan shutting down after updates?

Postby waferhead » Mar 19th, '13, 00:40

The fan on my Lenovo X200 I have been using a lot with lately started staying off after sleep/hibernate, and just randomly stopping starting yesterday (that I noticed)

Doesn't seem to have an issue running Win 8 or Android-x86 (sleep doesn't work yet), and has not had an issue prior to yesterday running Mageia Cauldron.
Anyone else noticed any ACPI related issues?

I haven't 100% eliminated all possiblility that it's a hardware issue, so just a heads up.
(Don't have a new fan for it, but it spins quite freely)

Do you have thinkfan configured? thinpad_acpi module loaded? What do the fan statistics show, when the fan doesn't spin? Does it correlate?
Maybe you want to take a look at some documentation about the setup: http://zmalltalker.com/zlog/thinkfan.html

Actually there seems to be some thrashing going on ~3.8ish mainline , probably getting towards the end of some major changes in i915 & related + ACPI upstream.

It mostly hit Sandy Bridge chipsets, but older stuff was affected as well. (my setups are GMA 965 ish, Lenovo X200T and X300)

Issue appears to have gone away for the moment with the latest kernel update, apparently it's been off and on since ~3.6, I just haven't noticed as I have been all AMD until I picked up a couple fixer-upper Thinkpads cheap recently.

For tons of info google "i915 acpi bug linux" or include "fan stays off " or "fan stays on" or "100% CPU"

I'm kinda wondering if I should close this as "solved" this as it's been a multi-year upstream issue that AFACT is still ongoing.

...or it could have been an "operationally challenged" fan.

Spun fine, Windows never complained, but after replacing it on principle, absolutely no issues.
(required removal of mainboard to replace, almost complete disassembly)
