No screens found - only command line login showing up

Postby Waystorome » Feb 15th, '13, 19:46

I obviously destroyed my graphic settings by attempt to switch to Gnome after a KDE installation (Mageia 3 Beta 2) was running perfectly fine.

All I can get to now is a linux prompt to login.
If I login and type "KDE4" I get a huge Error message ending with "fatal server error. No screens found. (EE).
It must have a connection in a destroyed "xorg" configuration because by trying to switch to Gnome I saw, that it wasn't clearly visible/available. It was not shown as "Gnome" in the menue as "available" I first went to something like "randdrake?" and then to something like "ICEM" and finally ... the command line prompt only.

Any help available?

Login as 'root' at the login prompt, then run
Code: Select all
XFdrake

This will start the graphics driver configuration tool (using a rather clunky text-based interface, as you don't have a working xorg server at the moment). Try using that to reconfigure your graphics driver. Note that in Mageia 3 beta 2, by default it disables the "start X on boot" option - you want to enable that.

If that doesn't work, unless you have particularly new hardware that needs Mageia 3 to work, I would recommend doing a fresh install using Mageia 2. Mageia 3 is still in development, and has a number of issues at present (particularly if you have a Nvidia graphics card). You are effectively running Cauldron which is the unstable development version of Mageia - so if you update your system, occasionally things will break!

Note that if you install from the KDE live CD, GNOME is not available on the CD, so can't be installed during the initial install. Not a problem - go to the software installation tool and install the meta-package 'task-gnome'. If, however, you install from the DVD, you can select both KDE and GNOME desktops to be installed. You can then try them both, and decide which you prefer.

Thanx a lot. Hope I find the time soon to do a reinstall. Maybe I wait for Mageia 3 final ...
