RC and Firefox

Postby smoreau » May 19th, '11, 17:04

Mageia RC
Firefox starts normally, but I am unable to really shutdown it. Apparently the windows is shut, but if you try to open a new issue, you have the following message : Firefox is already running but not responding...
If I disconnect from the session and start another session, I get at the opening a new firefox window. Not found such an issue in bugzilla.

A wild guess, are you using gtk-qt-engine?

(If you're running KDE4, and just want GTK+ apps to use the Oxygen KDE4 style, I suggest that you install oxygen-gtk and switch to that theme in systemsettings -> Applications appearance -> GTK styles and fonts, it's much better than gtk-qt-engine; if you're not running KDE4, please disregard this bit :)).

Many thanks Ahmad, you were right. I was using the gtk-qt-engine with qtcurve style. Switching to oxygen-gtk resovled the problem.

I have found the same problem on RC on a vanilla install - ie no changes made by me. I also find when I click on shutdown or restart from leave it displays an apparent almost empty firefox screen behind the shutdown or restart confirmation panel, this disappears when you click to confirm the action and the desktop screen comes up again briefly prior to the system going down..

You mean with firefox not shutting down completely?

If you can still reproduce the issue, close/quit firefox then make sure it's not still running in the background, either using any system monitor, or in terminal:
Code: Select all
ps aux | grep firefox | grep -v grep

I've seen it happen before also. I'm not sure if it's specific to FF only, it may happen to whatever the last window is closed. I'll pay attention next time I shutdown.

Just to confirm that it is NOT just Firefox (which had closed OK) but it displays the last opened window, in my test just now I had a console window open and it came up with the console top bar, a white screen and garbage lines where the normal toolbar is at the bottom edge.

Hi all
the problem you 're describing when you want to shutdown, restart or log off, appeared to me also, from the first mageia beta 1 installation until now. It shows in the background, usually, the last application that I was using and then closed, distorted, rippled, cut in pieces. Funny thing: once or twice, my Mandriva 2010.2 desktop image appeared in the background (Mandriva is installed in another physical hard disk) :o
Any way, the problem you mentioned, appeared while I was using the nouveau drivers (as they were present by default after the installation). After installing the nvidia proprietary drivers, the problem disappeared (but then -almost- the same problem appeared when trying to resize the konsole window, while having kwin effects enabled. It is discussed in a couple of posts elsewhere in the forum).

So, if you have nvidia graphics card and you are using the nouveau drivers, installing the proprietary nvidia drivers (from mageia repos, control center) that should fix the problem.

If you already have found another solution, please, let me know, I would like to try it.

Bye
John

That's weird, but not that weirdest I've heard of when desktop effects are enabled (Compiz or KDE4 alike in this situation)...

I also I have an older ATI card and using the default ati driver. I've also seen this happen since beta 1 through current and no desktop effects enabled. It happens with Gnome and now using KDE.
