Hi all.
About the annoying problem of konsole window resizing:
1. In System Settings > Desktop Effects > All Effects (2nd tab) > last setting, down the page: "Resize Window Resizes windows with a fast texture scale instead of updatig contents". Enable this setting and no more konsole window resizing
problem (it has also 2 configuration choises), BUT: it's not so "eye-candy" and it affects all applications' windows.
2. You could use also Yakuake, a very useful drop-down terminal (it's in the repos), until the konsole problem is fixed... sometime...
I'm saying that, because the konsole resizing problem appeared from the day I installed mageia beta 1 (x86_64 dvd and nvidia proprietary drivers installed with kwin desktop effects enabled).
The problem (the 'freeze") appears mostly, when trying to make the window bigger, not smaller. Also when clicking the "maximize" window button. And is not just the konsole window that freezes, I could say the whole desktop, because both mouse and keyboard are not responsive for some 4-5 seconds (until the konsole window gets its new size). In my installation, if I keep repeatedly trying to increase the size of the konsole window, I loose internet connection for, maybe 60 seconds, sometimes more. I get the notification: "You do not have any configured internet connection, etc, etc"
From that day, I was googling about the problem, in various distro's forums, mailing lists and bug reports. If anyone is interest about my findings, I think I kept them as firefox bookmarks, I could post them.
It seems, if i remember well, the problem is more complicated than just having desktop effects enabled and it goes quite sometime back (some said more than a year). It involves the combination of specific kernel version (2.6.38.xx), the current version of proprietary nvidia drivers, desktop effects enabled, applications with "transparent" background (like konsole) and, as it was mentioned in a post, the use of a Logitech usb mouse (I don't know, if that last one is correct... but I have a Logitech usb mouse. Do you?). So I decided to install other KDE distros. installed openSUSE 11.4, Fedora 14, Mandriva 2011 beta (2, I think). I installed, in all of them, the nvidia proprietary drivers that were the current ones in their repos and enabled the desktop effects (kwin). None of them had the problem when resizing konsole window, but none of them also, used the same combination of kernel version & nvidia proprietary drivers that mageia uses. So, I believe, it's safe to say that it is not a mageia mistake or bug or whatever... Just this combination of kernel & nvidia drivers "don't like each other". Maybe an experienced user (I'm not the one), could install an older kernel (like 2.6.36.xx or 2.6.37.xx) with the current nvidia drivers, or the opposite, leave the current kernel and install an older version of nvidia proprietary drivers and see if the problem is still present? Well, I don't know if it's worth someone's trouble doing so... Maybe it's easier and safer to wait for the next version of nvidia drivers....
dglent: How can I do that you're suggesting with konqueror & konsole? Can't find a selection for that in the konqueror menus.
bye
John
