mandriva to mageia, why are all TTY's different?

Postby atleeit » May 3rd, '12, 12:33

I'm currently using Mageia 2 at work and my boss uses Mandriva 2011, I can use TTY 1 all the way through 8 on Mandriva but Mageia is locked to 2? Anybody know the reason for this? The reason why I ask this is because I want to setup Mageia 2 as thin clients talking to a Mageia beast x terminal server but it looks like Mageia has been stripped down to basics? Please confirm.

First: Using a version under development in a production environment may not be the best decision. But OTOH there are not so many bugs left and MGA2 has almost reached RC.

As for your question:
In MGA2 the tty1 is used for the GUI so as default the first VT is available on tty2. This was discussed and implemented a couple of months ago during Alpha stage. This scheme is used by other distributions as well, Mandriva 2011 is rather old (September 2011) and still uses the old scheme. Same as Mageia 1, the stable version.

very true using in production is dangerous however as I'm a computer admin/support officer I normally can fix whatever issues I run into however I only started using it from Beta 3 release which to me is very stable. Well I'm just considering if Mageia will work nicely as thin-clients and set-up a Mageia 2 as a heavy server x terminal with a lot of specs.

Thank you for telling me, was just wondering why it changed that's all.

Iirc it has something to do with the systemd migration, but I could be wrong.
Having the GUI on tty1 is the default now in Fedora (and openSUSE iirc). I'm sure most others will follow, when migrating to systemd as well, so they won't have to patch upstream soft.

If you want to have more specifics, perhaps better ask at the devel mailing list, but momentarily we are in a busy time, shortly before the final release.
