Launching KDE desktop items

Postby juergen_harms » May 6th, '11, 09:47

Using KDE. Since a couple of days (left-)clicking a desktop item to launch a program or open a folder has become awesome: frequently there is no response and I have to try one or several times again (both on my desktop and my laptop). This is perfectly random - sometimes the first click brings immediate action, sometimes it doesnt.

Initially I thought that only parts of the icon are click-sensitive - but that does not hold. Right clicking the icon always works immediately (and opens a popup menu where I can hit "open"), the entire zone that is high-lighted when I hover over the icon is always sensitive for right clicks.

Everything was perfect until a couple (about 2) days ago, the recent 2 batches KDE updates did not bring any improvement. Has this been observed elsewhere?

I did not notice it.
Only a few packages can probably affects it : kdelibs,kdebase-workspace, but kdelibs changes since sunday are just to fix a kde-l10n problem (so no patch or anything else) last kdebase4-workspace change was on April 18th and you noticed the problem only 2 days ago.
We're going to push KDE 4.6.3 soon today, would you please check with this new version just in case.

I will check.

The reason is probably that I did set, about the time the problem started, folderview->display->icons-size to a size step smaller. But KDE should be able to handle the settings it offers - shouldnt it? (my laptop has a height of only 800 pixels, and I do not want the screen to be crowded by icons)

The 4.6.3 updates have arrived - installing them does not change the problem.

I played around a little bit with the influence of icon sizes - the problem only becomes annoying when the icon-size is just one above the minimum setting. Already with the next (higher) setting (customIconSize=32 in plama-desktop-appletsrc) nearly all mouse hits do what they are supposed to do - but, closely watching, there are some hits that do nothing.

Looks like an upstream problem that does not have much chance to get solved - I will go back to 32-bit icons.

Could you report it upstream & give the bug report link here so we can get a change to backport the fix eventually during Mageia1 ?

After some hesitating, I think that should be done. Hesitating - this is the kind of bug that will probably hang around in KDE bugzilla until doomsday - but the fact the there is a slightly random problem with hits on the desktop might hide something more serious, and in that case having filed bug that shows this aspect might be helpful.

Thank you for doing that - I do not follow KDE bugzilla and therefore would not be an efficient contact - evidently, I can provide any "second-line" feedback required.
