[SOLVED] Firefox - issue with installing missing plugins

Postby mrigs » Feb 5th, '12, 19:18

Hi All,

I recently got the Cauldron installed on a separate partition. My current issue with Firefox not being able to install plugins that it says are missing. It seems like some flash plugin is missing from this installation of firefox. When I try to install the missing plugins, the firefox plugin finder service keeps on searching. It does not report back any success/failure, nor does it stop searching.

Any pointers to what might be wrong here? The Firefox is v10.0.

-regards,
Mrigs

Just install the package flash-player plugin from the nonfree repository, like described in our MAQeia:
viewtopic.php?f=36&t=880
Then restart firefox, and you're done.

Installing the flash-player-plugin from the repo
is indeed the easiest way to get the best flash
plug in for Firefox. But, you have to take a
step back and remember that Adobe flash is an
unstable, and at times unsafe, Firefox plugin.
I keep a little directory with a collection of
past libflashplayer.so files. Sometimes you get
an update that'll break Flash features and
functions and I've got to go backwards to
get things working again. HTML5 forever!!!!

Thank you wilcal and doktor5000 for the quick response. I followed the instructions for the installation of the flash-player-plugin and got it installed. Both the generic and the KDE subpackage are installed. However, I am still getting prompts for missing plugins. Strangely though I don't see issue with Chrome. Is this a Firefox issue then? Any clues?

Where, and for which plugins? Do you have any example links?

These, for example:

https://www.onlinesbi.com
http://www.syfy.com/tinman/oz/

Even YouTube shows the missing plugin dialogue on the information bar. But it plays the videos.

I have been able to play all three of
the websites you linked to. The OZ
thing is pretty neat. I use in fact
the libflashplayer.so file directly
from Adobe to be found at:

http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer

I download the tar/gz version, untar it,
and plug that into /usr/lb/mozilla/plugins

Presently I have 11,1,102,55 installed
which according to Adobe is the latest.
But, as I previously mentioned I keep
copies of past libflashplayer.so files
because this thing breaks so often
that many times I have to revert back
to an older version, sometimes very old,
to get something to work.

I deal with videos on webpages all the
time and prefer to use:

http://flowplayer.org/

for my flv video player on the webpage.

Here's an example:

If you watch the entire video on this page
you'll see some of the very latest and
greatest of video capture equipment used

Many thanks wilcal. I was finally able to resolve the issue by following what you mentioned here. Although I had to do the same things a few times since for some reason while Firefox is running it would not install it properly (even with root).

Code: Select all
[mrigs@neptune Downloads]$ su
Password:
[root@neptune Downloads]# cp libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
[root@neptune Downloads]# cp libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
cp: overwrite `/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so'? y

Also, for benefit of others facing the same issue, here is a mozilla kb with step by step instructions: http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/installing-flash

And that's some nifty stuff that you have up there wilcal. Thank you. :)

Thanks again wilcal and doktor5000 for help with the Firefox issue.

Installing directly from Adobe is discouraged, it has no advantages, and you will miss on the automatic security updates.
You also could have solved your problems by looking at the MAQeia linked to above.

Yes agree, doktor5000. That should be the last option that should be tried out. I think the steps in MAQeia would have worked too, had I exited Firefox prior to installing.

You always have to restart firefox if you install/change plugins.

Understood. But restarting was not an issue here. I always restarted (browser, computer). It was only solved when I installed after exiting Firefox. That was my observation.
