Mageia 2 Alpha 3 first impressions

Postby wilcal » Jan 13th, '12, 18:50

Sorry to report that my attempt at both
a Vbox and regular install of:

Mageia-2-alpha3-i586-DVD.iso

have failed hung during the install.
The Vbox install ( Gnome ) hung at 2 min.
The standard platform hung at 5 min for
both KDE and Gnome. I've left all tests
run at hung for upwards of an hour but
still no success. I'll download the
64-bit iso and see if that is any different.

Both of these platforms easily install both
Mageia 1 and M2A2. I will continue my
testing later today.

For me, install went OK, but after reboot, the display manager failed to start. In /var/log/daemons/errors.log, this message is repeated a number of times:
Code: Select all
gnome-session[4847]: GLib-GIO-ERROR: No GSettings schemas are installed on the system#012aborting...

but
Code: Select all
# urpmi gsettings-desktop-schemas
Package gsettings-desktop-schemas-3.3.2-2.mga2.x86_64 is already installed

Also, /var/log/messages is being repeatedly written with the following message:
Code: Select all
kernel: b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode16_mimo.fw" not found
kernel: b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43-open/ucode16_mimo.fw" not found
kernel: b43-phy0 ERROR: You must go to http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#devicefirmware and download the correct firmware for this driver version. Please carefully read all instructions on this website.

Will investigate further and file bugs tomorrow, but this is a definite step backwards from alpha2.

I continue to experience a hang on install on:
Mageia-2-alpha3-i586-DVD.iso

In Vbox the hang occurs at 2min to finish.
On a standard system the hang occurs at 5min to finish.

I have been successful to install: Mageia-2-alpha3-x86_64-DVD.iso
into Vbox.

I have filed: https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4124

I will continue to test.

I guess I'm lucky as for me the installation fails to do anything after agreeing to the licence.
So no partitioning happens and the target disc is still bootable into whatever was on it before.

Kicking the tires on:

Mageia-2-alpha3-x86_64-DVD.iso

in Vbox for me appears to be Golden. Initially I can't
find a single thing wrong with it including properly
mounting of NFS shares. Tomorrow I'll be installing it
to a real drive on my SandyBridge editing machine.

The firmware for your wireless chip is missing, as requested by the free b43 driver. Should definitely be reported, so that it can be added to kernel-firmware.extra.

Yes. I managed to get a bit further by using b43-fwcutter to install the right firmware, but it wasn't that successful - I did once get a connection, but couldn't repeat it. It doesn't help that every time I run drakroam, it automatically installs the broadcom-wl driver and blacklists b43.

The annoying thing is that wireless worked out of the box with Mageia 1, using the brcm80211 driver.

Hello,
It seems there is a real problem with the wifi because I installed Mageia-2-alpha3-x86_64 and I also haven't any wifi.
Intel pro wireless 3945 ABG on a Dell laptop Latitude D630.
It works from time to time with Mageia 1 and not at all with Mageia 1 Alpha3.
