[Solved] Request for Mageia devs (Bumblebee,Primus,...)

Postby Dupo » Feb 2nd, '14, 01:39

Hi,

first, I want to thank Mageia devs for Mageia 4. Thanks for all your work.

I have a request to make to the Mageia devs. Well, as you know, many people have Optimus technology on their laptop (Intel/Nvidia). For now, Nouveau seems to be a possibility to use Optimus technology, but there is also another possibility : Bumblebee/Primus + bbswitch. As I see, there is no packages for Bumblebee/Primus and dkms-bbswitch in official repositories. I think these packages are very necessary for users of Mageia who have Optimus technology and who want to use the full potential of their Nvidia card. Well, you will tell me that there's a russian repository who offer all packages that I said above. But I would tell you that I prefer to use an official repository rather than an external repository (for the security).

Please, give us all necessary packages for Bumblebee/Primus and dkms-bbswitch on Mageia 4.

In advance, I will thank you.

Greetings.

Bumblebee has been added before but was not maintained and broke other stuff later, see e.g. http://archives.mageia.org/zarb-ml/mage ... 22132.html
No point in adding it again when nobody will maintain it and fix bugs about it.

Apart from that, such queries should be reported that as a package requests, after searching if they haven't been reported yet already: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/How_to_repor ... ge_request
But please have a look at the existing bugs about this:

https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1748
https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10218
https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12091
https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7330

Also, be aware that you can achieve a similar thing with the builtin features of newer nvidia drivers. See e.g. http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L ... ndr14.html

There's also a thread here with other hybrid graphics users: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=241

And finally, as a friendly reminder, please don't put something like "!!! IMPORTANT !!!" in the subject.

Hi,

ok, sorry (see your last comment). I will try to modify it.

I tried packages from russian mageia community and it works. I must check one or two things, but it is not too serious. But as I said above, I would prefer official packages rather than unofficial packages. If the russian mageia community can create packages for Bumbleblee,Primus,dkms-bbswitch, why one of your packagers can't do that ?
As you see (links),bumblebee request was made for Mageia 3 and Mageia 4.

Please read again, I've mentioned that. It's not just packaging them, but maintaining them, keeping them up-to-date, do bugfixes and security updates.
There was nobody for bumblebee to maintain it so it has been dropped.

There is a small team now working to properly support bumblebee and possibly also add to stable.

It will need testing though so if you want it, please help to make it happen. Mageia is made solely by contributors.

great news. Thanks. :)

Is that small team will also add support for Primus and dkms-bbswitch ? Bumblebee+Primus give more FPS for Nvidia card, and dkms-bbswitch is use to cut off Nvidia card when it was not necessary (seems to be automatic with this package).

No problem, if you give testing packages, I will test it on my laptop. Tell me when these packages will be ready. ;)

Greetings.

Note: I want to tell you there is also another alternative that could replace bumblebee, Primus. His name : Nvidia-Prime.
It will be available in Ubuntu 14.04 and Mint 17. Nvidia-Prime seems to be the real Optimus solution on Gnu/Linux, but I don't have more informations about it.

Dupo, than you should go through https://wiki.mageia.org/en/QA_Team . QA Team really needs manpower and i think they' ll gladly accept you to the team. Then you can get information about those packages; and if you will, you can help to test more packages and bugs.
