What software to KDE that can't be installed in Gnome? Does anyone have tips on how to know which software made to KDE can't be installed on the GNOME desktop and vice versa?
I imagine that the packages KDE and Gnome can be installed in both, but there are softwares that have restrictions, which are made only for a graphical environment. How to know what are? Or is it just checking one by one?
I found a site tolist of applications GNOME and all are installable in KDE.
I found another site with alist of KDE applications, but, are installable on Gnome? In practice, it works well?
I found an article about it "Desktops: KDE vs Gnome" which says:
- Application that are "made for gnome" or "made for kde" can be used with any desktop. This only means that that the program use a set of library functions found in their underlying gnome-libs or kdelibs. You do not need to use the actual desktops to use the applications, software made for KDE and Gnome can be used with any window manager / desktop as long as you got the proper libraries installed. There is no reason to use only applications made for the desktop you prefer, the "best software" for one task is made for KDE, the best for another task is made for Gnome. Use the best from both worlds.
I know two specific packages to Dropbox: The Kfilebox to KDE and Nautilus-dopbox to GNOME. They can only be installed on specific graphical environment, if it does not work or gives error .
Does anyone know of other softwares made to a specific graphical environment (KDE, GNOME, XFCE) and can't be installed (or not work) in another graphical environment?
This question is to know if it is necessary to warn first-time users if there are restrictions to installation of any pacote kde or gnome. This notice will be posted, if required, at table of software that I'm editing.
