Desktop Artwork

Postby Max » Jun 5th, '11, 08:04

I certainly appreciate all the hard work that the artwork team did, and they did an excellent job.
However, I for one would like a slightly shinier desktop, maybe something a little more flashy.
I do have some mediocre Gimp skills, and I will post the better results that I come up with.
I would like to invite other people to also contribute to this thread, seeing as how there really aren't any Mageia-specific wallpapers out there.
But first, a plea to the artwork team: could we please get the mageia logo in a high resolution png? Maybe an svg? Preferably both?
Thanks.

OK, here are the first results of my somewhat cumbersome attempts at shiny:

Here are three more wallpapers:

Mageia Simple 2 1280x800

Mageia Simple 3 1280x800

The swirly bits in those came from here.

If anybody has any ideas for more wallpapers, I'm open to suggestions.

I really like Mageia Simple 3 and Magic 1. What i'd really love to see is more of those, maybe with antialiased "lines",
perhaps you should try to redo those as vector graphics in Inkscape or the like?

Haha! Oh the irony.
Those lines are custom brush palettes that can easily be added to The Gimp, and appear in their original resolution (except in the smaller 640x400 sample images here in the forum).
However, I was well aware that they aren't as "clean" as perhaps they can be. In some cases I did try to hide the aliasing a little by adding a glow/blur effect behind the lines, and I think that I may have been successful in some cases.
Just this morning I decided that I need to teach myself more about working with vector graphics so I downloaded Inkscape and several tutorials and started tinkering. ;)
Maybe some day I will be polished enough to come back to these and redo them
But I truly thank you for your input.

Here is something different for wallpaper, different because it is real wallpaper from mid 1900-century. It is hand made by my friend and photo is by me.

Welcome to the Mageia forums tumbeliina, and thanks for your contribution!
You can congratulate your friend, for his (real) wallpaper looks great!

If you have some skills with Gimp or another advanced image editor, maybe you could try to fix the distortion induced by the angle of the camera? I know that some years ago I edited a few photos of painting to change the trapezoidal frames back to rectangles (like in reality, apart for the eye's distortion).

Nice job. I like the second one.

The first is a bit too much blue for my taste, needs some contrast :)

Hey everyone, these look great.

If you want to put them into a more standard place for consideration for Mageia 2, I have opened a artwork drop here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/Mageia-2-artwork
Thanks, Schultz

Could there be a place on the main Mageia website for official logos and such that's easily reached? I think we'd want users to create Mageia artwork and fill the internet with it. Having it readily available for download would go a long way. I remember when I looked for it, it took quite a bit of digging to find it.

Yep, the artwork team is meant to get some space on the git server, it just isn't there yet. Once that happens we can talk about putting a place on the website.

As for now, groups like this are the best that we have unless you know of something else, so if we can try to keep them as standardised as possible it helps.
