Kernel nrjX(treme?), the Next Generation... a step forward

Postby fraterlinux » Sep 5th, '12, 22:19

I'll pick the SRPMS for build and test in Mageia 2. Anyone would like to test these experimental changes?

Hi and welcome. Maybe it would be easier if you use the german Mageia forum: https://forums.mageia.org/de

Temporary flavour names list

kernel-nrj-workstation = mainline kernel-nrj-desktop plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI

kernel-nrj-multimedia = mainline kernel-nrj-desktop plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI
this has a higher HZ frequency, so It should be more reactive for all multimedia apps

kernel-nrj-studio = mainline kernel-nrj-desktop plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI
this has the hightest HZ frequency possible, it's the one est tuned for Pro Studio Audio (DAW)
This is the one we are testing (oiram73) with Jackd, Ardour, Rosegarden

kernel-nrj-realtime > mainline kernel-nrj-desktop plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI
we are experimenting some timers configs for realtime, it will be maintained only if works

kernel-nrj-laptop > mainline kernel-nrj-desktop plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI
with laptop configs and lower internal frequency, ONDEMAND profile to improve battery lasting

kernel-nrj-server > mainline kernel-server plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI
to be used in a generic server environment (like LAMP) and other server apps

kernel-nrj-gameserver > mainline kernel-server plus the add of +CK1 +BFS +BFQ +TOI
to be used in a game server PC for 3D FPS games, for example CounterStrike

Then we''l have some PAE flavours, and some CPU oriented + PAE
kernel-nrj-workstation-pae

these have been optimized for all Intel cpus greater than Pentium4 (starting from Centrino utto I3/I5/I7)
kernel-nrj-workstation-core2
kernel-nrj-work-core2-pae

I am compiling the kernel-3.5.3 here! Some volunteer to compile for architecture i586?

FWIW, normally in Mageia specs do not contain vendor, packager and distsuffix definitions, also the release (mibrel macro) is needlessly high.
Also flavours are too many IMHO. If all are low latency and optimized for multimedia in general, why have a -realtime, -workstation, -studio and a -multimedia flavour?

From what I understand all these flavors are an experiment about the result of joining several known projects in the vanilla kernel patches.
I'll look more calmly the spec. You could make suggestions to improve and optimize the build in Mageia 2?

Sorry, i don't have the time for that, and i'm not interested in such kernels, as i'm happy with the default kernel. It is stable and well-maintained.
