Postby baza » Jul 13th, '12, 03:09

Congratulations because now MAGEIA is the third in Page Hit Ranking by Distrowatch. The first in rpm packages. See http://distrowatch.com/

So what exactly is causing this? I mean, Mageia is obviously not that popular (it should rather be around Mandriva I guess). I think most Linux users wouldn't even recognize the name 'Mageia'. Maybe a lot of Mageia users visiting Distrowatch lately?

I think it is a combination of several reasons.
I have 'Google Alert' sending me search results about Mageia each morning - I found out that there are a lot of bloggers, self-made "experts" or other sites lately finding out that there is such a thing called "Mageia" (yes, a lot of people take more time than usual). Then it's not so long after the second release and people are still writing reviews. Then there are more and more Mandriva people either giving up waiting for the next release and looking around for a similar distribution. And of course there are all those Mageia fans who actually think it's fun to compete with the other fans....

So, a part of it is surely caused by couriosity (which is good). Anyhow, it is good advertising :)

Well, why do you think so? It definitely has much more buzz than Mandriva currently, which is nearly dead if you look at overall visibility ...

Nice.

But the already discussed non-value of this position is also easy to see. How does Mageia benefit from a top ten position? We do not sell anything, so the marketing impact is out. Did the position bring at least one single new packager or QA member or any new member to the teams? I sincerely doubt that - of course the various team leader may know better if there is any relation between this assumed popularity and the increase of new team members.

Did the popularity on DW generate any more active users in the forums (international, de or others)? Not that I could name any.

So what is this DW position worth to get so excited about?

Agreed. That's why I wonder why some people even care to look at that ranking. Or, why this is even worth 2 or even 3 threads in this forum.

Would it be some kind of enthusiasm towards the distribution maybe?
People want to see their Mageia going strong.

Well, my 1 cent-and-a-half-Groschen. :)

Yes, possibly, although I can't understand how a positive ranking which gives a wrong impression in many aspects, should make me happy. :)

Just like with magicians applying to your optical illusions?;)

Can't say, I was never interested in magicians, neither as a kid nor as a grown-up.
Some guy vanishes from the stage and comes back? So what? But I must admit, in most shows the female assistants are quite pretty... :)
