Mageia 2 compatability with Mageia 1 packages?

Postby barnac1e » Mar 29th, '12, 02:20

Hi,

I am interested in working with Mageia 2, while its still in beta mode, but one problem I have found both in Ubuntu and Fedora's betas is that repos for their previous and stable releases do not work with the betas that are being tested? Is this the case for Mageia 2 right now? Or should Mageia 2 indeed work with Mageia 1 packages from the get go? Thanks.

Some Mageia 1 packages may work on a Mageia 2 system, but many will not. You should use the cauldron repo's with Mageia 2 beta. These will eventually become the Mageia 2 repo's. Apart from some remaining bug fixes, cauldron repo's are now close to what Mageia 2 repo's will be.

Well, to tell the truth, I really want some of the tainted repos from Mageia 1, in particular libdvdcss and Handbrake, so if these are not compatable with Mageia 2 at the present, is there a way to consider implementing this for the final release?

Why not use the tainted repos from Cauldron?

Granted, handbrake is not in there, but it's not in the Mga1 repos either. It was for a short time but it was removed for license issues iirc.

libdvdcss is in the Cauldron/Mageia2 repositories, Handbrake I don't find in either 1 or cauldron.
If you want Handbrake make a package request at https://bugs.mageia.org/

You missed the info given a couple of minutes before:

I don't think a package request will change that.

No :)
I only commented your advice about requesting handbrake.

The tainted repo contains only tainted free software. Handbrake is tainted non-free software, for which at present there is no repo. The possibility of opening a tainted non-free repo has been discussed but no action has been taken yet.
