kernel xanmod

Postby GersonLearchman » Jun 15th, '21, 20:19

Hi all, Will it be possible to install the Xanmod kernel on Mageia 8? When I was on MX Linux I used it, and it improved a lot the performance of my machine, but I don't know how to install it on Mageia. Could you help me? Thanks in advance for your attention.

Sure it is possible. You'd have to manually compile and install it, like any other kernel.

In the best-case scenario it could be as easy as
Code: Select all
make oldconfig
make rpm
# install the generated rpm pakegs
reboot

But I wouldn't bother with it, you would need to basically support and update it yourself. Compared to what actual measurable benefits ?

With the Xanmod kernel you get less RAM consumption, increased system fluidity and less processor overhead.
I have tested and verified this when using MX Linux.
There it was installed like this:
Code: Select all
$ echo 'deb http://deb.xanmod.org releases main' | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/xanmod-kernel.list && wget -qO - https://dl.xanmod.org/gpg.key | sudo apt-key add -
$ sudo apt update && sudo apt install linux-xanmod

But I don't know how to do it in Mageia because it uses neither DEB nor APT.

I don't know how to do it, although in the page it shows that there is for Fedora, Arch and Gentoo, I don't know how to transfer those commands to Mageia.

Code: Select all
[copr:copr.fedorainfracloud.org:rmnscnce:kernel-xanmod]
name=Copr repo for kernel-xanmod owned by rmnscnce
baseurl=https://download.copr.fedorainfracloud.org/results/rmnscnce/kernel-xanmod/fedora-$releasever-$basearch/
type=rpm-md
skip_if_unavailable=True
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=https://download.copr.fedorainfracloud.org/results/rmnscnce/kernel-xanmod/pubkey.gpg
repo_gpgcheck=0
enabled=1
enabled_metadata=1

Forgive my ignorance, but he who asks learns and that is what forums were made for.

Hello,

I´ve read good reviews and youtube videos about xanmod specially for games.

This kernel would be great if MGA developers would test it.

I use mageia for gaming and it works great, it is very optimized and runs very good in all areas, but testing xanmod kernel would be great..

Hi there, as mentioned above, feel free to test it and provide feedback how it works in comparison to our regular kernel.
We currently have basically only one person who maintains our kernels, why burden him with packaging something for the distro which might not even provide meaningful benefits ?
